Instructor guiding a student at the Chapter 22 flight simulator

Flight Simulator

Introduction

EAA Chapter 22’s flight simulator at Cottonwood Airport in Rockford gives students, families, and visitors a practical first step into aviation.

Generously donated by Students in Aviation, the simulator helps us open the door to flying in a way that is welcoming, hands-on, and community-focused.

A Gateway to Flying

For many people, the simulator is their first time at the controls.

It gives new learners a safe place to build comfort and confidence before stepping into a real aircraft.

Students can practice:

  • Basic aircraft controls and coordinated movement
  • Takeoffs and landings
  • Straight-and-level flight and turns
  • Introductory navigation and situational awareness

Supporting Youth Aviation

The simulator supports several chapter programs and helps young aviators connect classroom learning with real-world flying skills.

It is regularly used to support:

  • Young Eagles events and youth outreach activities
  • Ray Aviation Scholarship students working toward flight goals
  • Ground school participants building core aviation knowledge

Community Education

Beyond youth programs, the simulator is also a valuable educational tool for the broader Rockford aviation community.

It helps parents, students, and visitors better understand how flying works, what pilots are managing in the cockpit, and how aviation training develops over time.

By making aviation more approachable, the simulator helps inspire the next generation of pilots right here in our local community.

Thank You to Students in Aviation

We are deeply grateful to Students in Aviation for donating this simulator to Chapter 22.

Their support has made it possible for more local students and families to experience aviation in a meaningful and encouraging way.
